For those of you who are not my friends on Facebook, this will be news to you. You know we received our referral two weeks ago. What you didn't know was that our trip was planned and I got to board a plane on my birthday to come see our daughter.
We have decided not to do huge updates on the blog because this is a very personal time for us and we would like to keep it that way. So, at least for right now, there will not be a lot of details. But we did want to update you all because we know there are a lot of people out there praying for Miah and we want you to know God hears your prayers.
We came here with a great deal of uncertainty as to what we would find when we finally got to meet Miah. We did not have much to go on based on her file, but what we knew was that she made good eye contact, understood what people were saying, but was not mobile or verbal. We also didn't have a good idea of her size or any of her development. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. (Side note: that didn't matter. We knew she was ours and nothing would change that. By not knowing is still hard.). I wasn't very excited at the start of this trip because I was guarding my heart and preparing for a very tough week. (I also had a stomach jug the day before and the day of our trip. So yes, I have been sick while preparing to meet both of our daughters.)
Well, the first day we met Miah she blew us away. She makes amazing eye contact. Our facilitator was amazed and said that its the best eye contact she has seen a special needs institutionalized child make. What great news!!! We have also discovered that Miah interacts with us MUCH better than we were anticipating. She can sit on her own, can push up into a kneeling position, and can crawl and scoot around on her back. She is very mobile. We have been told she can walk when holding onto someone's hands, but she hasn't been willing to try that with us. She plays "games" and understands that certain actions get fun reactions from us. And she remembers these games and keeps coming back to them to get our attention.
This trip has been very good for us and I think it is an awesome thing that her country does, requiring the adopting family to make a visit trip. It has allowed us to prepare for her homecoming and not be caught off guard by anything. We know we still have a very long road ahead of us and we have no idea the progress she will make when she comes home. But we KNOW she is going to be just fine with us and we will see great improvements. She already recognizes us and enjoys spending time with us. And she already has us wrapped around her finger.
Seriously. This kid is amazing. We are so blessed to know her and be working to bring her home. God is so good in how He has prepared her for us. He has kept her safe, provided her with loving caretakers, therapists, and an increase in care. He has protected her spirit and given her unspeakable joy in such an unfortunate situation. Seriously, this girl is SO VERY HAPPY. We are learning a lot from her and are so blessed by her.
God is good. All the time.
